Lymphatic Therapy

cosmetic-surgeryPre/Post Surgical MLD

There have been international research projects that have proven MLD treatment both before and after a surgery can help reduce pain, swelling, and the risk of infection. By performing MLD treatments (usually 3 sessions) before a surgery the lymphatic system is flushed and less swelling is noted after surgery.

The best time to start MLD after a surgery or an injury is immediately after the procedure. Personally, I have started post plastic MLD while the patient was still in the recovery room.

When the body is injured, the local lymphatic vessels will contract as part of a safety mechanism to reduce the spread of infection. In addition, the cells create more biological waist with increased metabolism. Finally, the third component is the immune system stimulate the cells to secrete cytotoxins and recruit more T-cells and B-cells. All three of these component lead to an increase in swelling and pain.

When a therapist performs MLD, they open the pathways and allow the fluid to be moved out of the area. By preventing the swelling or by minimizing the edema, there is less pain. Post treatments very based on the persons lymphatic system, the type of surgery, the pain medications, and the quickness of receiving MLD. It is suggested that a person has at least four post treatments within 2 weeks of the surgery.

Sport Injury

If there is swelling the a limb, the head, brain, or trunk, I can address the issue. Most people do not realize that by removing swelling then the pain will reduce and the patient can recover quicker. The treatment consist of MLD (soft tissue massage) and kinesio tapping. The therapist may also suggest a bandaging system.

Research Notes: Current research and older scientific methods have suggested that increased pressure in the lymphatic nodes and vessels can lead to and inflation in the joints.  Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can be reduced by stimulating the lymphatic system.

  5. Hi there! This is my 1st comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say I truly enjoy reading through your posts.
Can you recommend any other blogs/websites/forums that cover the
    same subjects? Thank you!

    • I would suggest the Dr. Vodder School of North America. They are the leading school for lymphatic therapy. I don’t know of any specific blogs or websites. However, Liz Olivas in Boca Raton does MLD and also Suzi Davey from South Africa. Try googling key words like lymphedema, lymphatic treatments, etc.

Good luck and let me know if I can help you with anything.
